Toe pain is not always related to an underlying condition. It may be caused by:

  • Injury
  • Fractures
  • Abnormality in the toe structure


Self Treatment

Self-treatment: Self- care steps that may be helpful in some less- serious cases:

  • Rest the foot till the pain subsides
  • Avoid activities that put direct pressure on the toe
  • Try applying ice pack
  • Do not use tightly fitting footwear
  • Try padded shoe inserts in case of bunions


See a doctor if you notice:

  • Persistent pain and swelling that doesn't improve or is getting worse
  • Numbness or tingling near the toe
  • Toe deformity


See a doctor immediately if you notice:

  • Severe pain or swelling
  • Open wound
  • Wound with pus
  • Fever or signs of infections
  • Inability to walk or balance
  • Loss of sensation
  • Inability to straighten the toe
