Hip pain is not always related to an underlying condition. It may be caused by:

  • Hip sprains and strains
  • Hip dislocation
  • Injury or trauma by an object


Self Treatment

Self-treatment: Self- care steps that may be helpful in some less- serious cases:

  • Rest and ice application to the affected area
  • Take pain relievers and anti- inflammatory agents e.g. ibuprofen
  • Avoid activities that could worsen the pain
  • Use a walking cane to avoid straining while walking if necessary
  • Do not sleep on the affected side


See a doctor if you notice:

  • Daily activities cannot be performed


See a doctor immediately if you notice:

  • Deformity
  • That the leg or hip cannot be moved
  • Intense pain and swelling
  • Open wound and oozing of pus
  • Inability to bear a lot of weight
