Common causes

Eye pain is not always related to an underlying condition. It may be caused by:

  • Eye strain from use of computers for extended hours or driving long distances
  • Inadequate sleep


Self Treatment

Self-treatment: Self- care steps that may be helpful in some less- serious cases:

  • Have good sleep habits such as uninterrupted sleep
  • Use a cold compress
  • Try over the counter pain relievers
  • Rest your eyes and take a break from activities that cause eyestrain
  • Use over the counter artificial tears in case of dry eyes


See a doctor if you notice:

  • The pain does not get better in 2 or 3 days
  • Other symptoms are seen
  • It occurs after eye surgery or injection
  • Headache, fever


See a doctor immediately if you notice:

  • Eye pain due to injury or accident
  • The pain is severe and nausea or vomiting is also experienced
  • There are sudden vision changes
  • Pain occurring after eye surgery or injection
  • Difficulty in moving the eye
