Common causes

Chest pain is not always related to an underlying condition. It may be caused by:

  • Lifting heavy weights
  • Anxiety
  • Trauma to the chest
  • Flatulence
  • Heartburn


Self Treatment

Self-treatment: Self- care steps that may be helpful in some less- serious cases:

  • Stop and rest quietly by sitting or lying down
  • Do not attempt to drive


See a doctor if you notice:

  • The pain gets worse when you take a deep breath; or, not breathing for a few seconds reduces the pain significantly.
  • The pain is related to moving or pressing on a specific part of the chest wall, neck, or shoulder.
  • Chest pain that doesn't go away.


See a doctor immediately if you notice:

  • New chest pain
  • Excessive sweating
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness
  • Chest pain lasts for more than 10 minutes (at rest)
  • Pressure, squeezing, tightness, crushing sensation on the breastbone
  • Chest pain spreads to the jaw, left arm, or back
  • Confusion, an accelerating heartbeat, or rapid breathing
  • Very low blood pressure or very low heart rate
