Common causes

Arm pain is not always related to an underlying condition. It may be caused by:

  • Overuse
  • Sprains & strains
  • Fractures or dislocated bones
  • Skin rashes
  • Injury


Self Treatment

Self-treatment: Self- care steps that may be helpful in some less- serious cases:

  • Rest the affected hand or reduce level of activity
  • Apply an ice pack
  • Try over- the- counter topical pain relievers or mild oral pain relievers
  • Light stretching or self massage
  • Avoid repetitive movements or take frequent breaks
  • Elevate your arm above heart level in case of swelling


See a doctor if you notice:

  • Pain is relieved on resting but gets back after initiating activity
  • Restricts movement of the arm partially
  • Swelling which does not resolve
  • Stiffness in the morning
  • Difficulty in performing simple regular tasks
  • Numbness tingling sensation in any part of the arm


See a doctor immediately if you notice:

  • Sudden onset
  • Severe unbearable pain
  • Visible deformity or protruding bone
  • Accompanied by pressure, fullness or squeezing in your chest
  • Fever
